I first heard of Miguel on a song he did with J. Cole called All I want is You and to be honest I didn’t like him at first. I was like who is this guy? Why is he singing so high? I guess I was so conditioned to hearing the full baritone voice of John Legend (who was really popular at the time) that Miguel’s voice in comparison sounded annoying to me. Over time these tenor ranged R&B singers started to flood the radio stations. Miguel, Frank Ocean, Bruno Mars, Adam Levine from Maroon 5, and Justin Beiber were all topping the pop and R&B charts and eventually I grew to love this sound of a sweet soultry tenor voice over hip-hop and R&B tracks. The next track I heard Miguel on was a Wale song ,lotus flower bomb. When I heard this song I was totally hooked (and also hella jealous of this man’s vocal range). Not only do I really like Wal’s verse but Miguel’s hook is soooo good you sometimes want to skip the verse just to get to it. Well since then, he’s released 2 more albums “Kaleidoscope Dream” and “Wildheart.” Both very successful projects. The hit single from his most recent album is called “Coffee” and might be one of his only songs that I can come close to covering because most of Miguel’s songs are way out of my range. (Of course I change key but to me it changes the feeling of the song when you bring the key down too much). Anyways, “Coffee” is a super catchy song and I wanted to do a stripped down acoustic version of this song; vocals, guitar and bass. And of course I had to throw some sax on it or it wouldn’t be me!
